app store sales vs proceeds

App Store Sales, Proceeds and Payouts Are Not the Same Number

Your App Store dashboard can show several revenue numbers. Knowing what each one represents prevents bad revenue reporting and reconciliation errors.

One of the easiest accounting mistakes for an app developer is asking a seemingly simple question: How much did my app make this month?

There may be more than one correct number depending on what you are measuring.

Sales

Sales describe customer purchase activity. They are useful for product performance, but they should not automatically be treated as the amount the developer earned or received.

Proceeds

Apple defines proceeds as the amount a developer receives from app and In-App Purchase sales after applicable taxes and Apple's commission.

This makes proceeds much closer to the developer's economic revenue from the platform than the customer-facing purchase price.

Payout

The payout is the amount Apple sends toward your bank account for a reporting period. Bank or intermediary fees can still create a difference between the amount sent and the amount that ultimately appears in your account.

Why the distinction matters

If you compare customer sales directly with a bank deposit, the numbers can look wrong even when both reports are correct.

A better reconciliation chain is:

sales → refunds/adjustments → fees/taxes → proceeds → currency conversion → payout → bank receipt

Keeping this chain visible makes accountant questions much easier to answer.

Do not collapse everything into one revenue field

A revenue system should preserve the original concepts instead of turning every amount into a generic revenue value.

Faturatik is designed around this idea: normalize platform data without destroying the financial meaning of the source report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are App Store proceeds?

Apple describes proceeds as customer price minus applicable taxes and Apple's commission.

Why can my bank deposit differ from the payout shown by Apple?

Bank fees and intermediary transaction costs can reduce the amount ultimately credited to your bank account.

Should I use App Store sales as my accounting revenue?

Not automatically. The appropriate accounting treatment depends on your business and jurisdiction, but sales, proceeds and payouts should at minimum be kept distinct.
